Beware the Early Signs and Symptoms of Melanoma

Unprotected sun exposure can cause more than just the short term damage of sunburn. Overtime it can cause dark spots to appear on your skin, change the color and size of your existing moles, and it can also increase your chances of suffering skin cancer.

The type of skin cancer known as Melanoma can be caused by increased sun exposure as well as other genetic factors. With early diagnosis it can often be cured with a 100% success rate. However, if melanoma spreads it can metastasize to other parts of the body.

Once this happens, the resulting and related cancers can develop and even prove life threatening.

Here at the Dermatology Center in Orem Utah Drs. Jenson and Edwards encourage people to beware the early signs and symptoms of melanoma. This could include changes in an existing mole or area of your skin such as asymmetry developing in an existing mole that was previously circular or otherwise symmetrical in shape.

You should also be concerned if an existing mole develops an irregular or poorly defined border or if it changes in color. This could include a mole has shades of tan, brown, or black, or has areas that are white, red, or blue. A mole that expands its diameter is also a sign. Melanomas usually have a diameter greater than 6mm at initial diagnosis. However, it is possible for them to be smaller.

If you live in the Orem, Utah area and you are experiencing signs and symptoms of melanoma, you should call 801-224-5200 to schedule an appointment at the Dermatology Center.
