For those with deep acne scars, Drs. Jenson and Edwards may recommend dermabrasion and dermaplaning, which treats acne in Orem, Utah. Dermabrasion and dermaplaning is a treatment that refinishes the skin’s top layers through controlled surgical scraping. This treatment improves the appearance of facial skin that is scarred. The surface irregularities are smoothed, giving the skin a smoother appearance. Dermabrasion and dermaplaning can be used on a small area of the skin or on the entire face.
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and a half, depending on how much skin is being treated. The procedure may be performed more than once if the scarring is deep or if a large area is being treated. Both procedures can be performed under local anesthesia. During dermabrasion, our dermatologists will scrape the outermost layer of skin away using a rough wire brush, or a burr that contains diamond particles, attached to a motorized handle. This scraping continues until a safe level that will reduce the appearance of the scar is reached. With dermaplaning, an instrument that resembles an electric razor is used. It is moved back and forth over the skin to skim off the surface layers. This continues until the skin is more even.
