Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand-name product containing a neuromodulator called botulinum toxin. When injected, this toxin affects motor nerves by stopping their communication with muscles. As a result, those muscles cannot flex while the product is active.

The Dermatology Center offers careful Botox injections for several treatment purposes. Most people know Botox for its cosmetic purpose of treating fine lines that appear with age due to the combined loss of collagen and repeated facial expressions.

A Botox injection procedure takes only 10 minutes or so to complete. You don’t need any time to recover after your injections, so you can return to work or go about your day as usual as soon as you leave the office.

What does Botox do?

The Dermatology Center offers Botox to serve a few different purposes, including its popular cosmetic use. Based on your needs or goals, your doctor might recommend Botox to treat:

Fine lines and wrinkles

Fine lines and wrinkles like crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines appear because your facial muscles flex in these areas. Using Botox, you can minimize these lines temporarily. Your provider makes sure the Botox only affects the targeted muscles, so you don’t look expressionless or frozen after treatment.

Migraine headaches

Migraine headaches can also see improvement with Botox injections. If you have chronic migraines, which consist of at least 15 headache days per month, Botox can block some of the chemical releases in your brain that cause your pain.

Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. If you seem to sweat uncontrollably under the arms, Botox injections can temporarily stop those sweat glands from being overactive.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)

TMJ is an issue with the joints of your jaw. They could be painful or stiff, even resulting in intermittent jaw locking. Botox relaxes the muscles to relieve these symptoms.

How long do Botox results last?

Botox is not a permanent fix for fine lines, migraines, or any other treatment purpose. Each time you get the injections, the results last for 3-6 months. However, you can repeatedly get Botox injections at the Dermatology Center to maintain those results for longer.

After you get Botox injections several times, your results might start to last a bit longer each time.

Am I a good candidate for Botox?

To use Botox safely, you need to be at least 18 years old. You should also make sure your provider knows about any allergies you have just in case you might be allergic to something in the product. Additionally, you should hold off on getting Botox if you’re pregnant or have an active skin infection in the treatment area.
